THEY were sealed up almost 150 years ago to protect their contents from the British Raj. Now the secrets of one of southern India's holiest temples are to be revealed at last.

Six ancient vaults beneath the 16th-century Sree Padmanabhaswamy temple in Thiruvananthapuram, the ancient capital of Kerala, are being opened this week after an order from the Indian Supreme Court.

Two of the lockers, which are sealed with granite boulders and are thought to contain large quantities of gold, silver, jewellery and other objects once owned by the Maharajahs of Travancore, have not been opened since the 1860s. The other four have been closed since the 1950s. READ…
