Slaughter of Syria's rebels: 50 killed as city bombarded

Corpses littered the streets and Syria lurched towards civil war yesterday as government forces rained death on the country’s third biggest city.

More than 50 civilians were killed and left where they fell as soldiers pounded Homs with 300 rockets in a pre-dawn assault which left black smoke filling the air above burning buildings.

As the brutal Syrian regime stepped up its attacks on the rebels, Homs resident Wael said by telephone: “Security forces have been relentlessly shelling the city since this morning. On the streets, there are only bodies and wounded people along with tanks.

“People are panicking. We feel the world has abandoned us.”

The American embassy in the capital, Damascus, was closed as diplomats fled the city yesterday and the British ambassador was dramatically recalled to the UK. READ...
